How to Tell Your Ford Needs a Transmission Repair

Your Ford’s transmission is responsible for converting the raw power of your engine into refined power to move your car. The system of gears in the transmission allows this power to be finely-tuned. These gears ensure that your wheels receive the right amount of power for the speed that’s required. As your Ford dealer, we’d like you to know some of the signs that your transmission is showing signs of wear and that you need a transmission repair.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is vital to keep your transmission working effectively. A transmission is filled with hundreds of fast-moving components which generate excess heat. The fluid helps to cool these parts and provides lubrication which allows them to move fast. Transmission fluid also provides hydraulic power to allow your gears to shift smoothly and easily.
If you find red or black liquid underneath your car you probably have a transmission leak. This leak could be caused by a worn seal or gasket, damage to the transmission fluid cooler, or even damage to the transmission pad. If you drive with a transmission leak, your transmission could run out of fluid and start to overheat. Our technicians must find the leak and fix it ASAP.

Non-Responsive Transmission

Your transmission should quickly and easily shift gears according to the dictates of either you or your transmission computer. If your transmission suddenly fails to respond, your car won’t be able to move. Without the transmission to channel your engine’s energy, your engine will continue to run but the power it generates is useless.
There are several possible causes for this failure, including a malfunctioning transmission computer, a clogged transmission filter, or a damaged solenoid. Our technicians will examine your transmission and find the cause of the problem. A clogged filter or a damaged solenoid can be easily replaced, and a transmission computer can be updated or reprogrammed.

Gurgling Noises

The odd sound of gurgling from your transmission means there’s a problem. Your transmission is filled with fluid that controls the temperature, provides power for the gears to shift, and lubricates all the moving parts. This fluid is essential to keep your transmission working perfectly. The gurgling sound comes from a lack of fluid.
The lack of fluid is causing air to be drawn up the transmission one instead of fluid. Transmission fluid isn’t consumed as it works, so a lack of fluid points to a leak. If you don’t see any fluid underneath your car, transmission fluid is leaking into other parts of your engine. We advise calling our service department immediately, as driving without fluid in the transmission can cause serious damage.
There are many other signs that you have a problem with your transmission. Our Ford-trained technicians can diagnose and repair any transmission problem. If you feel your transmission isn’t working as well as it should, call our service department at Empire Ford Lincoln so we can repair it for you.
